Summary

Republican, former vice president of San Diego County Taxpayer’s Association and policy director for Kevin Faulconer (when he was D2 councilmember). Won 56.44% of the primary vote.


Analysis

Backed by the establishment, Chris Cate hopes to use his incumbency as his main tool in this election. He seems to have weathered the storm caused by his release of confidential Soccer City documents. Now he will need to deflect his opponent’s anti-establishment messaging.

Democrat and longtime DJ for 91X, KPRI and FM 94/9. He came in second place with 17.42% of the vote during the primary between six candidates.


Analysis

Hough’s confident voice, humble upbringing and environmentalism paint him in stark contrast to Cate’s establishment ways. Though a long shot, Hough is clearly the choice for progressive Democrats in this race.
