Incumbent. Republican and Former Santee Mayor Voepel is vice chairman of the Assembly’s Veterans Affairs Committee. He was able to disprove an allegation from a Republican challenger in the spring primary saying he’d faked a part of his military service record, specifically by wrongly claiming credit for a Combat Action Ribbon. In 2016 when he was running unopposed, Voepel achieved a certain amount of notoriety after the Los Angeles Times quoted him saying climate change is a good thing that hurts 'enemies on the equator'
“As your Assemblymember, I am working hard on behalf of this district to lower taxes, support job growth, protect public safety, support veterans, and reduce the size and scope of state government.” Typical Republican.

Democrat and Chaldean community activist/Democrat is running as a “corporate - free” candidate. His network of supporters have been making his campaign much more high profile than the district is used to seeing with a Democratic challenger.
His top 3 priorities are public banking, Medicare for all, and investing in education and apprenticeship programs to rebuild infrastructure. Sounds like a good progressive.
