State Senate - District 36
North San Diego Coastal / So. Orange County. Cities in the district include Carlsbad, Encinitas, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, Oceanside, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Vista.
Republican Pat Bates has been one of the few rising stars in her party, starting as a City Councilmember, becoming Mayor, and moving up in 2007 election to the Orange County Board of Supervisors. She went on to be vice chair of the Assembly Appropriations and Assembly Health Committees, and was the founding chair of the Republican Women’s Caucus. In 2017, Bates became the second woman to lead a party caucus in the Senate’s history – Democrat or Republican.
Among the Republicans campaigning on the “repeal the Gas Tax” bandwagon. Believes securing the border of California should be one of the Legislature’s highest priorities even if it calls for deploying the National Guard. Defunding Gov. Jerry Brown’s “High Speed Rail” project is a priority. Bates believes that at least 80 percent of education spending should be required to be spent in the classroom instead of on administrator salaries. Typical Republican for big business. Does not vote for environment, education, Clean Money or Civil Rights.

Democrat and TV Producer Marggie Castellano was deeply involved in campaigning for the 2016 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. At the Democratic National Convention she and the 1,900 delegates for Bernie Sanders, made history by fighting to make the Democratic platform as progressive as it could be. After returning from the convention, she campaigned for Tri-City Healthcare District Board of Directors (Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad), garnering 22,759 votes.
“My priorities include: 1) stellar, affordable public education, so the USA will remain competitive; 2) clean, renewable energy; 3) affordable, single-payer healthcare; 4) modernized mass transit; 5) strong consumer rights; and 6) creation of jobs that pay middle class wages.” Very progressive. Love her! Going to be a long shot chance at winning.
